ALTERNATIVE SOCIAL PROTECTION INCENTIVES FOR INFORMAL TRADERS IN AFRICA AMID COVID-19

Webinar

 Friday, 14th August 2020 @ 11h00 – 12h30  (GMT+2)

BACKGROUND

There are a plethora of research and advocacy movements for social protection frameworks for informal economy workers in Africa. While comprehensive social protection systems are more common in “developed” regions, by now, many of us understand the barriers of its development and implementation in Africa.

The benefits of social protection are indubitable and in the absence of these frameworks as well as the insufficient noble relief grant offered by some African governments, what alternative incentives could vendor associations propose for informal traders to cushion their livelihoods during this pandemic and beyond?

Join us as we discuss these possibilities with various informal trader associations from different African countries.

OBJECTIVES OF WEBINAR

• identify why Africa struggles to implement social protection frameworks for informal economy workers

• Propose interim incentives that could be considered amid COVID-19 and beyond

• Identify possible consequences of not having social protection systems in place
